News Release

First of two installments delivered to support local infrastructure priorities

August 2, 2017    Winnipeg, Manitoba         Infrastructure Canada

Modern, safe and efficient public infrastructure helps connect people to jobs, provides better access to community services, attracts new businesses and creates economic growth.

In July, the Government of Canada delivered the first of two annual $34.3-million federal Gas Tax Fund (GTF) installments to Manitoba. In total, the province will be provided with over $68.7 million this year through the fund. The funding, which flows through the provincial government to all of its municipalities, is now available to support community infrastructure projects.

Based on previous years, the GTF supports approximately 90 local infrastructure projects across Manitoba each year.

Some examples of projects being funded this year include an outdoor aquatic centre with a six-lane junior Olympic pool and water slides in the Municipality of Gimli. The City of Dauphin is reconstructing several roads and the Town of Gillam is investing in training related to asset management planning. The range of planned projects helps demonstrate the flexibility that the GTF provides.

The two Gas Tax Fund installments for this year are in addition to funds flowing to Manitoba under the Investing in Canada plan.

“Through the federal Gas Tax Fund, communities across Manitoba and the rest of Canada can direct federal funding to the infrastructure projects that address the most pressing needs of local residents and businesses, from improving drinking water to building new recreational facilities. The Government of Canada is proud to deliver this predictable, long-term funding to help ensure access to good middle class jobs, increased mobility, greater economic opportunities, sustainable communities and a high quality of life for all Canadians.”

The Honourable Amarjeet Sohi,
Minister of Infrastructure and Communities

“Our government continues to focus on strategic investments in community infrastructure that respond to local priorities. The federal Gas Tax fund is another effective way for municipalities to have a fair say on how funding is invested in their communities, and has been a valuable means of support for a number of important projects across our Province. Manitoba is proud to work together with the Federal Government to help facilitate these investments, which contribute to economic growth, job-creation and strong, vibrant communities.”

The Honourable Eileen Clarke
Minister of Indigenous and Municipal Relations
