Performance review

Canadian Armed Forces members are subject to yearly performance assessment. These assessments provide constructive feedback and measure your performance and potential for career progression. For answers to common questions about performance assessments, review the Frequently Asked Questions below. If you don’t find information specific to your situation, contact us.

  • I am dissatisfied with my Personnel Evaluation Report. What can I do?

If you are dissatisfied with your Personnel Evaluation Report (PER), the first thing you should do is ask your supervisor or the individual who assessed you for an explanation. An informal request is often the most efficient way to get answers to your questions.

If you believe your PER is not an accurate description of your performance or potential, you will have to substantiate your claim to your supervisor and the reviewing officer.

Your local Conflict and Complaint Management Service (CCMS) agent can advise you on informal and formal resolution services. Additionally, they can help current Canadian Armed Forces members submit, track, and resolve complaints.

If you remain dissatisfied with your PER assessment, you can submit a grievance to your commanding officer. For more information on submitting a redress of grievance, consult our frequently asked questions about Redress of Grievance process.

Effective 22 September 2020, the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) has delegated final authority for PER grievances to the following officers:

    1. Commander Military Personnel Command,
    2. Chief of Military Personnel,
    3. Commander Maritime Forces Atlantic,
    4. Commander Maritime Forces Pacific,
    5. Commander 1 Canadian Air Division,
    6. Commander 2 Canadian Air Division
    7. Commander 2nd Canadian Division,
    8. Commander 3rd Canadian Division,
    9. Commander 4th Canadian Division, and
    10. Commander 5th Canadian Division.
