Ministerial Working Group on Regulatory Efficiency for Clean Growth Projects
The Ministerial Working Group (MWG) on Regulatory Efficiency for Clean Growth Projects was established in 2023 to coordinate Government of Canada efforts to grow the clean economy, create an efficient regulatory framework to support the development of clean growth projects, help meet Canada’s net-zero commitments, and increase investor confidence. Our goal is to improve the regulatory system for the benefit of Canadians.
Ministers met throughout autumn 2023, looking at concrete ways to improve the Impact Assessment Act, and address the recent Supreme Court finding of unconstitutionality; enhance Indigenous partnerships and accommodations; increase collaboration with provincial, territorial and Indigenous jurisdictions; and increase coordination among federal departments in the regulatory approval process.
As a result, the MWG helped inform the measures outlined in Budget 2024 for Getting Major Projects Done. These measures, taken together, will improve the efficiency of Canada’s impact assessment and regulatory processes for major clean growth projects, while maintaining robust environmental protection and respecting Indigenous rights.
Action Plan
As part of this work, the MWG has released an action plan, Building Canada’s Clean Future: A plan to modernize federal regulatory and permitting processes to get clean growth projects built faster.
The Ministerial Working Group will continue to meet and oversee the implementation of the measures announced in the action plan, to make sure progress remains on track.
