Information and input on the Canadian Biosafety Standards and Guidelines

Stakeholders and other interested parties had opportunities to provide input on the development of the Canadian Biosafety Standard (CBS) 2nd edition. The details of the information and input process can be found below.

Why was the Information and Input Process Necessary?

Stakeholder engagement was a key element of the overall project, and provided an opportunity for interested parties and stakeholders to provide meaningful and well-informed input on the draft CBS. The information and input process also provided knowledge-building opportunities to support participants in understanding the content of the CBS and how it will be implemented.

Who Provided Input?

The information and input process was open to any interested party. All pre-existing Canadian Biosafety Standards and Guidelines (CBSG) requirements that were modified, and all newly developed requirements, were posted in an online survey for a 75-day consultation period (starting June 20, 2014) to allow stakeholders to provide their input. A section of the survey was also included for stakeholders to comment on any aspect of the CBS. The CBS consultation period coincided with the consultation on the draft Human Pathogens and Toxins Regulations (HPTR) as published in Canada Gazette I.

How to Provide Input for Future Editions?

The CBS 2nd edition was published on March 11, 2015, at the same time as the Human Pathogens and Toxins Regulations (HPTR). The CBS replaced the CBSG on December 1, 2015, the day the HPTR came into force along with the full implementation of the HPTA. The Public Health Agency (PHAC) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) welcome comments, clarifications, and/or suggestions for incorporation into the future editions of the CBS. To this end, please send information with references (where applicable) for continual improvement of the CBS to:
