COVID-19 mandatory hotel stopover: Plan and book

Now is not the time to travel. We strongly advise you to cancel or postpone non-essential trips.

All travellers entering Canada, regardless of citizenship, must follow testing and quarantine requirements. This is to keep everyone safe, particularly given the new COVID-19 variants in Canada and around the world.

Exemption for eligible fully vaccinated travellers

Starting at 11:59 pm ET on July 5, 2021, there will be some exemptions for people eligible to enter Canada, who also meet specific conditions for fully vaccinated travellers.

Who has to do a hotel stopover

Flying to Canada

Driving to Canada

At this time, you don't have to complete a hotel stopover if you're driving to Canada.

You do have to follow other testing and quarantine requirements based on your situation:

Choose and book your hotel

You must ensure that you have a confirmed booking at a government-authorized hotel before boarding a flight coming to Canada. Book your hotel in the same city as the airport of your initial arrival into Canada.

Border measures can change with little or no warning. It's strongly suggested that you book your hotel as close as possible to your arrival date in Canada.

If rooms aren't available for your preferred dates, you must change your flight for a date when a government-authorized hotel is available.

Sharing a hotel room

Only people who live in the same household may stay in the same hotel room if travelling together.

You could face a fine of up to $5,000 if you don't provide evidence of a pre-booked and pre-paid accommodation at a government-authorized hotel prior to entering Canada.
