COVID-19 mandatory hotel stopover: Ended
August 9, 2021: Hotel stopover ends
The 3-night hotel stopover requirement ends for all travellers scheduled to arrive by air after 12:01 A.M. EDT on August 9, 2021.
Arriving August 9 or later: Mandatory hotel stopover no longer required
The requirement to book and stay in a government-authorized hotel has ended, for all travellers regardless of vaccination status Testing and quarantine requirements still apply.
If you're arriving by air after 12:01 am EDT on August 9, you do not have to book or stay at a hotel.
If your flight is departing before August 9, but is scheduled to land after 12:01 am EDT on August 9th, you may be asked to include your booking reference number in ArriveCAN before you board your flight.
You may answer "No" to having a reservation and still proceed with your ArriveCAN submission to receive your receipt. You will see a flag on your ArriveCAN receipt that indicates "no mandatory hotel booking."
You will show your receipt to a border services officer upon entering Canada. They will verify that your scheduled arrival time was after 12:01 am EDT and confirm that you do not need to book or stay at a hotel.
If you arrived before August 9 and are staying in a government-authorized hotel, you may checkout at 12:01 am EDT on August 9. You will not receive a fine.
Go directly to your place of quarantine.
- Negative result from your arrival test: You must remain in your place of quarantine and complete your Day-8 test. You can only leave your place of quarantine if you have completed your mandatory 14-day quarantine. In the event that you develop signs and symptoms of COVID-19 or receive a positive result for any type of COVID-19 test while in quarantine, you must follow the instructions of the public health authority specified by a screening officer or quarantine officer.
- Positive result from your arrival test: You must isolate yourself from others immediately for a period of 14 days beginning on the day you tested positive for COVID-19, which is the day you took the test.
- Invalid or indeterminate result from your arrival test: You must take another test. Collect another specimen using your Day-8 kit with the instructions provided. Contact your service provider, and ask them to send you a replacement kit, to use on Day-8 of your quarantine.
Hotel refunds for travellers who have already booked their hotel or are already in a GAA and are checking-out on August 9:
Please contact the hotel where you have booked to discuss a refund with them directly. It is the Government of Canada's expectation that hotels will not charge travellers for any booking made for or after, and those checking-out on August 9, 2021.
