Use ArriveCAN to enter Canada

Effective April 23, 2021, the Day-10 test has changed to Day-8 for travellers entering Canada.

We understand that some travellers may have received an incorrect notification through ArriveCAN on when to complete their test. If you arrived on or after April 23, take your test on Day 8.

If you arrived on or before April 22, take your test on Day 10, or as directed by the border official upon entry. Continue to answer 'no' to the test prompt in ArriveCAN until the day you have completed and sent your test to the lab. Answering 'no' until you complete and send your test will not influence your adherence to the testing requirements.

Use ArriveCAN to provide mandatory travel information on and after your entry into Canada. It only takes minutes to help keep each other safe.

Keeping Canadians safe

All travellers are required to provide travel, contact and quarantine information upon and after entry into Canada. This is part of Canada's efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and prevent importation. This information is crucial to Canada's response to COVID-19.

Paper forms can be incomplete or inaccurate, and can take days to process. To help provinces and territories protect their citizens, the Government of Canada has moved to a safer and faster paperless process.

Complying with the Quarantine Act

It’s an offence under the Quarantine Act to:

An offence could lead to any or all of the following:

Entering Canada by air or land

All travellers, with limited exceptions, whether entering Canada by air or land, must use ArriveCAN. Travellers will need to submit the following information electronically before they board their flight or before arrival at a land border crossing:

Mandatory reservation at a government-authorized hotel

Air travellers must book a 3-night stay at a government-authorized hotel.

In ArriveCAN, you'll be asked to enter your trip reference code that you'll get when you book your government-authorized hotel. You won't be asked in ArriveCAN to enter the hotel name or address.

Mandatory COVID-19 molecular tests before and after entry

Unless exempt from pre-border testing, travellers entering Canada by air or land need to show proof of a:

  • negative molecular COVID-19 test result taken within 72 hours before the scheduled departure time of your flight or arrival at the land border crossing or
  • positive COVID-19 test taken between 14 and 90 days before the scheduled departure of your flight or arrival at the land border crossing in Canada

Entering Canada by marine

ArriveCAN isn't mandatory if you're travelling to Canada by marine. However, you're strongly encouraged to submit your travel information through ArriveCAN. This will speed up processing at the border and limit points of contact.

Show your ArriveCAN receipt to the Canada border services officer upon arrival.

Submitting your information

Once you submit your information through ArriveCAN:

If you don’t travel with a smartphone

Submit your information by creating an account and signing in online. Print or take a screenshot of your receipt and take it with you when you travel.

No data on your phone while travelling

Submit your information before you leave and take a screenshot or printout of your ArriveCAN receipt to show upon entry into Canada.

No computer or smartphone

You can sign in online on any computing device, like those found in Internet cafés or libraries.

If you don't submit your information through ArriveCAN, you won’t be denied:

  • boarding if arriving by air
  • entry into Canada if crossing at a land border

However, you may:

  • face additional delays at the border for public health questioning
  • be subject to enforcement action

Exceptions to mandatory digital submission

Travellers who are transiting through Canada to another country (and aren’t leaving the secure area at the airport) don't need to submit their information through ArriveCAN.

After you've entered Canada

The day after you arrive in Canada, all travellers, whether you travel by air, land or marine, must use ArriveCAN to:

Government of Canada officials will call you to ensure that you're complying with your mandatory quarantine or isolation. You must answer calls from 1-888-336-7735 and answer all questions truthfully to demonstrate your compliance with the law. You may also receive a visit from a designated screening officer to confirm your compliance with the quarantine or isolation order.

If you’re directed to a designated quarantine facility, you won’t have to report through ArriveCAN. However, you’ll be subject to reporting requirements at the facility.

If you’re exempt from having to quarantine, you don’t have to report after you’ve entered.

How to use ArriveCAN

Use ArriveCAN to submit your information easily and securely before your arrival in Canada. ArriveCAN is available to download as a mobile app or you can create an account and sign in online.

Whether you're entering Canada by air, land or marine, use ArriveCAN to:

Details you’ll provide to ArriveCAN

You provide the following information in ArriveCAN:

  • contact information, such as your name, date of birth, email address, phone number and travel document details
  • unless exempt, the trip reference code for your 3-night reservation at a government-authorized hotel
  • travel details, such as your:
    • date of arrival
    • port of entry if you're entering by land or marine vessel or
    • flight number, airport and airline if you're entering by air
  • the purpose of your travel (such as exempt travel, work, study, family reunification or compassionate reasons)
  • any symptoms of COVID-19 you may be experiencing

For your quarantine plan, questions include:

  • whether you have accommodation where you can quarantine for 14 days or possibly longer
  • the address of your final quarantine location (the place where you’ll finish your 14-day quarantine)
  • whether you can avoid all contact with other people who didn’t travel with you while in your place of quarantine
  • whether you’ll have access to basic necessities of life, including water, food, medication and heat, without leaving quarantine
  • if there are people at increased risk from COVID-19 at that place who:
    • are 65 years or older
    • have underlying medical conditions
    • have compromised immune systems
  • if there are any people at that place who work or assist in a facility, home or workplace that includes people at increased risk from COVID-19
  • whether it's a group living environment or houses multiple families, such as:
    • group residence
    • care facilities
    • living with roommates you can’t avoid who didn’t travel with you

The ArriveCAN mobile app saves your contact information (name, date of birth and travel document information) for travel at a later date.

How to report after you've entered Canada

How you report depends on whether you:

Used ArriveCAN to enter Canada

If you used ArriveCAN before you entered Canada, you'll get a push notification on your phone or an email on the second day of your quarantine. This means the day after you entered Canada. The notification alerts you that you're ready to confirm:

  • your arrival at your place of quarantine or isolation or government-authorized hotel
  • you can start your daily symptom reporting through ArriveCAN

You'll be able to complete your mandatory reporting in less than a minute.

When you open the app or sign in online, you’ll have prompts to help you confirm and complete your daily check-in. You’ll also receive daily emails.

If you can't use ArriveCAN after your entry, call 1-833-641-0343 daily during your quarantine period.

Didn't use ArriveCAN to enter Canada

If you submitted your information verbally to a Canada border services officer or by paper form when you entered Canada, you can't use ArriveCAN to complete your mandatory reporting. You must call 1-833-641-0343 instead. It will take approximately 5 minutes to complete your daily reports.

Using ArriveCAN for someone else

If you're travelling with others, you can include multiple travellers in your ArriveCAN submission.

As the primary traveller, you may provide travel information for yourself and for:

  • your spouse or common law partner
  • your children (or children for whom you have legal guardianship), aged 18 years or younger
  • any other adult for whom you're a legal guardian

You can provide information for up to 8 travellers, including yourself, in a single submission. Use this when:

  • you'll all stay together at the same address for the entire quarantine or isolation period (including the government-authorized hotel) and
  • you have their permission to collect and share this information

If you're travelling with a child whose only documentation is a birth certificate, you don't need to submit their information in ArriveCAN. You'll be provided with an alternative option at the Canadian border.

Exempt travellers must complete their own submission. They can't be part of a group submission.

If you're not the traveller, you can submit travel information on behalf of others who may be unable to use ArriveCAN by signing in online.

You’ll need to fill out ArriveCAN with the traveller’s:

  • quarantine address or plan information
  • contact and travel information

You’ll then be able to print or email the receipt to the traveller.

The traveller can complete their post-border reporting by calling 1-833-641-0343 each day during their 14-day quarantine. The information they provide when they call must match what you submitted in ArriveCAN on their behalf.

You must send the receipt to the traveller to show to the Canada border services officer upon arrival to Canada. The traveller is responsible for ensuring they’re compliant with the requirements for entry into Canada.

How to use ArriveCAN for travel exempt from quarantine

You may be exempt from having to quarantine if you're entering Canada under certain conditions. This includes if you provide essential services and maintain the flow of essential goods or people.

If you’re exempt from quarantine, you don’t have to include a quarantine plan through ArriveCAN. However, you must still submit your contact information, travel details and symptoms you may be experiencing. You don't need to complete any reporting through ArriveCAN after you enter Canada.

ArriveCAN won't confirm your exempt status. An ArriveCAN receipt shows that you've successfully provided your information. It doesn't validate your eligibility to enter Canada or exempt travel status. Your exempt travel status will be determined at the border.

ArriveCAN:

How your ArriveCAN information is used and disclosed

The Government of Canada uses and discloses the information you provide in ArriveCAN:

  1. to verify or enforce compliance with the emergency order under the Quarantine Act
  2. for public health follow up, including by the provinces and territories

When you enter Canada, you'll be told:

  • how we'll verify that you're complying with the requirements
  • possible consequences if you don't comply, such as enforcement actions and penalties

The Government of Canada will contact you during your mandatory quarantine or isolation period to verify that you're quarantining or isolating. You must answer calls from:

  • GOV/GOUV CANADA
  • 1-888-336-7735

Answer all questions truthfully.

We may share your information with law enforcement and security partners for compliance and enforcement follow-up activities.
