How is Ebola diagnosed?

Ebola is diagnosed based on:

  • symptoms
  • travel history
  • laboratory testing

Diagnosis can be difficult because Ebola symptoms are similar to those of other diseases, such as malaria and typhoid.

How is Ebola treated?

There is currently no specific licensed treatment for Ebola. Patients are treated for their symptoms. Treatment includes:

  • supporting blood pressure and oxygen delivery
  • ensuring proper fluid and electrolytes levels (necessary minerals for the body)
  • strict isolation in an intensive care unit to prevent the disease from spreading to others

Some people who get Ebola are able to recover without treatment. However, up to 90% of Ebola patients die. The sooner you get treatment, the better your chances for recovery.
