What are the risks of getting polio?
As long as polio infections continue to occur, there is a risk of contracting polio.
Immunization is the best way to protect children and stop polio. The polio vaccine is given according to the recommended schedule (usually starting at 2 months of age). The vaccine can protect a child for life.
The Public Health Agency of Canada works closely with international partners, including the World Health Organization, to monitor polio activity around the world. Canada also supports worldwide efforts to get rid of polio completely.
