West Nile Virus and Other Mosquito-Borne Disease National Surveillance Report – December 6 to December 19, 2015 (Report Weeks 49 & 50)

Humans
During surveillance weeks 49-50, ending on Dec 19, 2015, no human cases of West Nile virus were reported to the Public Health Agency of Canada (the Agency).
As of surveillance week 50, a total of 78 human clinical cases have been reported to the Agency: Quebec (40), Ontario (33), and Manitoba (5). Of these, forty-five (58%) were classified as West Nile virus Neurological Syndrome, twenty-six (33%) as West Nile virus Non-Neurological Syndrome, and seven (9%) as Unclassified. In addition, four (4) asymptomatic infections from two provinces have been reported: three in Quebec [Laval (1) and Montérégie (2)] and one in Ontario [Toronto].
Mosquitoes
As of surveillance week 50, 173 (0.86%) out of the 20,046 mosquito pools have tested positive for West Nile virus in Canada: Quebec (33), Ontario (94), Manitoba (30), and Saskatchewan (16).

Dead Birds
As of surveillance week 50, the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative and the Quebec Ministry of Health and Social Services have reported a total of 51 dead birds that tested positive for West Nile virus: Quebec (21), Ontario (29), and Saskatchewan (1).
Domestic Animals
As of surveillance week 50, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the Québec Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, have reported a total of 11 horses that tested positive for West Nile virus: Quebec (1), Ontario (3), Manitoba (1), Saskatchewan (3) and Alberta (3).
United States
As of December 16, 2015, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported a total of 1,996 human cases of West Nile virus:
Alabama (10), Arizona (92), Arkansas (18), California (681), Colorado (101), Connecticut (10), Delaware (2 ), District of Columbia (4), Florida (10),Georgia (15), Idaho (13), Illinois (70), Indiana (21), Iowa (14),Kansas (33), Louisiana (43), Maine (1), Maryland (46), Massachusetts (9), Michigan (18), Minnesota (6), Mississippi (39), Missouri (28), Montana (3), Nebraska (68), Nevada (7), New Jersey (25), New Mexico ( 14), New York (52), North Carolina (4), North Dakota (23), Ohio (35), Oklahoma (87), Oregon (1), Pennsylvania (30), South Dakota(40), Tennessee (6 ), Texas (248), Utah (8), Virginia (21), Washington(24), Wisconsin (8) and Wyoming (8).
Of these, 1,312 (66%) were diagnosed as neuroinvasive disease cases, 684 (34%) as non-neuroinvasive disease cases. 111 fatal cases have been reported. In addition, 331 presumptive viremic blood donors have been identified.
European Union, European Economic Area and Neighbouring countries
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has reported a total of 108 cases of West Nile fever in humans in the EU Member States and 193 cases in the neighbouring countries, since the beginning of the 2015 transmission season. Domestic Animals
As of surveillance week 50, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has reported a total of seven horses from three provinces that tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus: Ontario [Richmond (1), Carlsbad Springs (1), Gananoque (1), Brinston (1)], Quebec [Saint-Lambert (1)] and Nova Scotia [New Germany (1), South Brookfield (1)].
