COVID-19: New requirements for people entering Canada
The Government of Canada has introduced new requirements for anyone entering Canada, whether by air, land or sea.
All people now entering Canada are required to wear an appropriate non-medical mask or face covering while in transit to their place of isolation or quarantine.
Everyone must quarantine or isolate themselves for a period of 14 days beginning on the day they enter Canada.
Individuals cannot isolate or quarantine in a place where they would be in contact with vulnerable persons. This means:
- adults aged 65 and over
- people of any age who have compromised immune systems or underlying medical conditions
They must isolate or quarantine in a suitable location where they will have access to the necessities of life; and are required to monitor their health for fever, cough and difficulty breathing.
Individuals entering Canada with symptoms must isolate themselves from others and stay inside. They should undergo health assessments as required, and, if the symptoms get worse, immediately contact their public health authority and follow their instructions. They should not leave their place of isolation unless it’s to seek medical attention.
Those entering the country without symptoms must quarantine, which means that they must stay at their place of quarantine and avoid contact with others.
If they develop symptoms during those first 14 days, they must contact their public health authority and extend the period of quarantine for 14 days following the date when the symptoms first began.
For those unable to quarantine or isolate themselves in a suitable location, they will be transferred to a quarantine facility chosen by the Chief Public Health Officer of Canada.
These new measures will limit the spread of COVID-19, help protect the health of individuals, particularly those Canadians who are most vulnerable.
