Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program

From: Public Safety Canada

Keeping communities safe

On May 1, 2020, the Government of Canada banned 1,500 assault-style firearms and variants as part of its comprehensive strategy to tackle gun violence in Canada. Today, more than 2,000 makes and models have been banned.

As part of this strategy, the Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program (ASFCP) will provide fair compensation for eligible businesses and individuals who possess these prohibited firearms and devices and participate in the program.

Program for businesses

The program is now open for businesses across Canada.

  • Eligible businesses can create an account and submit a claim to receive compensation
  • Businesses may also choose to permanently deactivate firearms for a flat rate
  • All claims must be submitted through your ASFCP account no later than April 30, 2025 to receive compensation

Businesses and licensed carriers are responsible for verifying if any provincial laws may impact participation in the program. Contact the appropriate provincial authorities for more information.

Program for individuals

The program is not yet available for individuals.

Individuals in possession of prohibited firearms and devices must continue to securely store them according to their classification prior to May 1, 2020.

Only individuals who held a valid firearms licence on May 1, 2020 (and who have maintained that licence in good standing), will be eligible to participate in the program.

See the lists of impacted firearms and devices including those eligible for compensation for individuals.

All licensees will be contacted when the program begins. More information will be available in 2025.
