Government of Canada supports New Brunswick firms through Build in Canada Innovation Program

News Release

October 27, 2017 - Fredericton, New Brunswick - Public Services and Procurement Canada

The Government of Canada is committed to growing the economy, strengthening the middle class and helping those working hard to join it. Through the Build in Canada Innovation Program, the Government of Canada is investing in Canadian innovations to create inclusive and sustainable economic growth for communities across Canada.

Matt DeCourcey, Member of Parliament for Fredericton, today announced that the Government of Canada is investing in 2 made-in-Canada engineering solutions.

Envenio Inc. has received a $492,000 contract for its innovative simulation software, EXN/Aero. The software allows engineers to simulate air or fluid flow in and around objects (such as aerodynamics of a car) at a fraction of the cost traditionally associated with simulations. The innovation is being tested by Defence Research and Development Canada and by National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces.

TotalPave Inc. has received a $231,278 contract for its Pavement Condition Data Collection System, which uses smartphone technology to collect data on road and sidewalk conditions. The innovation is being tested by Public Services and Procurement Canada.

These investments were made through the Build in Canada Innovation Program, which helps Canadian innovators land their first sale and have their innovations tested by the Government of Canada. This program is just one of the many ways the Government of Canada supports innovation and small and medium-sized businesses across Canada.

Quotes

“Through the Build in Canada Innovation Program, the government is supporting companies like Envenio Inc. and TotalPave Inc. by matching their innovative products with government needs. The Build in Canada Innovation Program helps companies find a crucial first customer, while departments get early access to useful state-of-the-art technologies.”

The Honourable Carla Qualtrough
Minister of Public Services and Procurement

“Companies like Envenio Inc. and TotalPave Inc. are helping Canada become a leader in innovative technology. Today’s announcement demonstrates how the Build in Canada Innovation Program is supporting small and medium-sized businesses througout Canada.”

Matt DeCourcey
Member of Parliament for Fredericton

“I’m pleased to have our innovation recognized by the Build in Canada Innovation Program and look forward to working with Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) on this project. Envenio and DRDC have a long history of collaboration and a common goal of advancing CFD simulation technology. It is very exciting to have this opportunity to make Canada a leader in the CFD simulation space and to help DRDC take their work to the next level.”

Chief Executive Officer
Envenio Inc.

“TotalPave is mobilizing our technology, providing Parks Canada, Public Services and Procurement Canada and 2 provincial departments with the tools they need to make data-driven pavement management decisions. The smartphone-based system provides the same standard data at a fraction of the cost of traditional equipment. The Build in Canada Innovation Program was instrumental in unlocking the doors to working with the federal government, especially for a small technical team like TotalPave.”

Quick Facts

  • Envenio Inc.

    • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a branch of fluid mechanics that uses numerical analysis and data structures to solve and analyze problems that involve fluid flows.
    • Simulations are a vital part of the design process, and until now, simulation tools had large license fees and required high-cost computing hardware. Envenio Inc.’s EXN/Aero reduces the simulation time by up to 20 times using cloud-based supercomputing resources, along with an on-demand pricing model.
    • This innovation is targeted towards engineers, particularly in the aerospace, marine and automotive industries. It allows them to conduct complex accurate simulations for a fraction of the cost traditionally associated with simulations.

  • TotalPave Inc.

    • TotalPave Inc.’s Pavement Condition Data Collection System drastically reduces the cost of collecting industry-standard pavement measures by using smartphone technology rather than expensive high‑speed data collection vans.
    • All the data collected is streamed wirelessly to the client’s web-based dashboard automatically. From there, data can be viewed on the colour-coded map or exported to various formats for analysis.

  • Build in Canada Innovation Program

    • More than 260 contracts have been awarded under the Build in Canada Innovation Program, including 9 in New Brunswick, worth over $3 million.
    • More than $115 million has been awarded in contracts since the Build in Canada Innovation Program began in 2010.
