Auto-file your tax return using Canada Revenue Agency’s File my Return service!

About File my Return

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has improved this free service for the 2021 tax‑filing season to help eligible individuals with low or fixed income auto-file their taxes.

With the File my Return service, eligible individuals will be able to file their income tax and benefit returns simply by giving some personal information and answering a series of short questions through an automated phone service.

File My Return is free, secure and easy to use. There are no paper forms to fill out or calculations to do.

Eligibility for File my Return

File my Return will be available for eligible individuals who have low income or a fixed income whose situations remain unchanged from year to year. Those who may be eligible will receive an invitation letter in the mail with the 2020 Income tax package or in a separate envelope by mid-February 2021, but it may arrive later due to COVID-19 delivery delays.

The service will verify and confirm your eligibility at the beginning of the call.

Register for direct deposit

Combining direct deposit with the File my Return service, is the fastest way to obtain a refund.  With direct deposit, a refund goes directly to your bank account within eight business days.

Using File my Return

If you are eligible, you will receive an invitation letter which will give you all the information you will need to use the automated service and auto-file your tax return. You will be asked to answer a series of short questions and follow the prompts provided during the call.

You can hang up at any time during the call. If they hang up, information will not be saved and their income tax and benefit return will not be filed.

File my Return uses information the CRA has on record at the time of the call, plus answers you provide to complete and auto-file your income tax and benefit return.

If you are eligible, you can begin using File my Return on Monday February 22, 2021, at 12 pm, Eastern Time.

If you are a resident of Québec, the service only completes the Federal portion of the income tax and benefit return. The Québec provincial tax return is handled separately by Revenu Québec. For information on filing a Québec provincial tax return, contact Revenu Québec.

Protect yourself against fraud

The CRA recognizes that there is a significant financial and emotional effect on victims of scams, fraud, and identity theft and its doing its best to protect Canadians and ensure they receive the benefits to which they are entitled. 

As a fraud prevention measure, you can sign up for email notifications from the CRA to receive a notification when they have new mail to view in My Account and when important personal information such as their address or direct deposit information is changed on CRA records.
