Readout: Advisory Committee on the Charitable Sector – May 19, 2021

The Advisory Committee on the Charitable Sector (ACCS) held a virtual meeting with the Minister of National Revenue, Diane Lebouthillier, on May 19, 2021.

Mr. Geoff Trueman, Assistant Commissioner, welcomed the participants to the meeting and thanked Minister Lebouthillier for taking the time to speak directly with the Committee about their progress and recommendations.

The Minister thanked the committee co-chairs, Hilary Pearson and Bruce MacDonald, and the entire ACCS for their work. She recalled her previous career as a social worker, and emphasized the importance of the work of the charitable sector, especially during the pandemic. She extended her thanks for those who continue to support Canadians during these challenging times.

She congratulated the committee on the two reports they have published to date and is looking forward to reading their third report. She advised the ACCS that legislative amendments are a long and complex process and that any changes will require patience. She also advised the ACCS that it will be important to establish priorities.

In closing, she noted that she has been impressed with the work of the ACCS and thanked the Secretariat and the Department of Finance for supporting this committee. The Minister opened the floor to questions from the ACCS members.

Mr. Trueman concluded the meeting by thanking the Minister and the committee members.

The next ACCS meeting will be held virtually on May 31, 2021.
