GST/HST credit - Overview
Due to flooding and mudslides in British Columbia and severe weather in Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia, affected residents may experience a delay in the mail delivery of their CRA benefit and credit cheques. If you are affected, visit Canada Post for updates on your mail delivery.
You can also sign up for direct deposit so you can keep getting your benefits directly to your account. Visit Direct deposit – Canada Revenue Agency or call the Canada Revenue Agency at 1-800-959-8281.
The CRA can apply your goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) credit payments to pay tax debts and other government debts. As a temporary measure in response to COVID-19, the CRA will not deduct your GST/HST credit payments to repay tax debts and other government debts, including amounts owing due to being ineligible for COVID-19 Canada Emergency or Recovery Benefits.
The goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) credit is a tax-free quarterly payment that helps individuals and families with low and modest incomes offset the GST or HST that they pay. It may also include payments from provincial and territorial programs. You are automatically considered for the GST/HST credit when you file your taxes.
