CRA's review of your application
After your application for the DTC is received, we assess it to determine if you are eligible. Our decision is based on how the information given by the medical practitioner meets the DTC eligibility criteria.
How the review process works
- We receive your application. Both Part A and Part B must be received together for the application to be considered complete. Both Part A and Part B need to be received by the same application method (paper or digital).
- We complete the review, comparing the information in your application with the DTC eligibility criteria.
- In some cases, more information is needed to complete the review. We may send the medical practitioner a letter asking for more information, such as documents to support your application. Your medical practitioner has 60 business days to respond. We will advise you in writing if we have requested this information.
- If we asked for additional information, we review that information when it is received.
- When our review is complete, we send you a letter (notice of determination) that tells you CRA's decision.
If you mail your DTC application with your tax return, we will review your application before assessing your income tax return. Please note that you may apply for the DTC at any time during the year.
How long will it take
We aim to process your application and send you a notice of determination in a timely manner. It may take longer if information is missing. To view the status of your application, sign up for a CRA account and use the progress tracker or Check CRA processing times to see average processing times.
We will respond once a decision has been made.

Status explanations
- Received
- Your disability tax credit submission has been received by the CRA but we have not assessed it yet.
- In progress
- Your submission is currently being reviewed.
- Information requested
- We have revised the target completion date because we need more information to complete our review.
- Target completion date update
- We need extra time to finish processing your application. Unless you are contacted by the CRA, you do not need to do anything.
- Completed
- We have completed our review of your submission. We have sent the results of our review to the person with the disability. If your application has been completed, you can check your DTC eligibility status in your CRA account, on the Benefits and Credits page under the Disability tax credit (DTC).
- Tracking stopped
- Your submission will no longer be tracked in the progress tracker, but we will still review what you sent us. No additional updates will appear in the progress tracker.
If your application has been completed, you can check your DTC eligibility status in your CRA account. The information will be on the Benefits and Credits page under the Disability tax credit (DTC).
If your application is approved and relates to previous years, you will need to request a change to your tax returns for each of those years. If you checked the box on the DTC application form asking the CRA to adjust your previous returns, we will re-assess your returns for those years you were eligible for the DTC. We will send you a notice of reassessment once we have completed your request.
