Line 31400 – Pension income amount: Completing your tax return

Note: Line 31400 was line 314 before tax year 2019.

To calculate your claim, complete the chart for line 31400 on the Federal Worksheet. Enter on line 31400 of your return whichever amount is less: $2,000 or the amount from line 8 of the Federal Worksheet for line 31400.

If you and your spouse or common-law partner elected to split pension income, follow the instructions at Step 4 on Form T1032, Joint Election to Split Pension Income, to calculate the amount to enter on line 31400 of your and your spouse's or common-law partner's return. Enter the amount on line 31400 of your return as follows:

  • If you are the transferring spouse or transferring common-law partner, enter whichever is less: $2,000 or the amount from line 17 of Form T1032
  • If you are the receiving spouse or receiving common-law partner, enter whichever is less: $2,000 or the amount from line 29 of Form T1032

Tax Tip

You may be able to transfer all or part of your pension income amount to your spouse or common-law partner or to claim all or part of their pension income amount. For more information, go to line 32600.

Remember to claim the corresponding provincial or territorial non-refundable tax credit you may be entitled to on line 58360 of your provincial or territorial Form 428.
