Enterprise Data Centre Borden CIO tours

This year, Shared Services Canada (SSC) hosted three groups of Chief Information Officers (CIO) for tours of Enterprise Data Centre (EDC) Borden. This gave us the opportunity to show off this state-of-the-art EDC to CIOs and senior managers from ten partner departments.

CIOs and other partners were very impressed with the reliability, security, and energy efficiency of this newly opened facility, and we had some great conversations about how EDCs can help them on their journey to realizing Canada’s digital government vision. Here is what Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) CIO Tammy Labelle had to say about EDC Borden and what it would mean for her department:

Amalgamating workloads in one EDC

“One of the biggest challenges for PSPC is that we have a lot of very different business lines. They are scattered across multiple data centres across the country. It’s very difficult to manage and to make sure that we are getting the right computing services for those businesses.”

EDCs eliminate the need for maintenance shutdowns

“Maintenance shutdowns are always a challenge between SSC and the departments because the department has business blackouts (during shutdowns). Eliminating that will resolve a lot of issues.”

More information on the EDC itself, including its greener design (which led to a LEED certification) and how it can protect against cyber security threats for Canadians can be found on the EDC Borden web page.
