Government of Canada highlights critical role of women in Canada's economic success
Minister Hajdu salutes winners of WXN most powerful women top 100 awards
November 26, 2015 – Toronto, ON – Status of Women Canada
Today, the Government of Canada congratulated recipients of Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Awards™ for 2015 at an event hosted by the Women’s Executive Network (WXN) in Toronto.
Minister of Status of Women, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, also took the opportunity to underscore how important women are to Canada’s future prosperity, in positions from the skilled trades to corporate boards. She urged the Top 100 Awards recipients to keep in mind that with this great honour comes responsibility to empower, encourage, mentor, and champion other women in their respective fields, and amplify their voices. The Minister added that the Government of Canada recognizes women are critical to Canada’s economic success. As part of its plans to boost the Canadian economy, the federal government will identify innovative ways to support new economic and leadership opportunities for women.
- Women continue to hold senior leadership positions throughout the public, private and non-profit sectors in Canada. However, they remain under-represented in fields as diverse as skilled trades, on corporate boards, and in elected positions at all levels.
- The Minister of Status of Women will work to ensure that the federal government’s senior appointments are merit-based and demonstrate gender parity.
- The Minister of Status of Women has been mandated to help ensure that gender-based analysis is applied to federal decision-making.
- Through Status of Women Canada, the federal government supports projects that engage organizations at the national, regional, and local level. These projects tap into the expertise of these organizations to enhance the economic security and prosperity of women and girls.
“I am pleased to congratulate the outstanding women named by WXN as the Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada. Their success reflects the critical role of women in Canada’s economic success. That’s why we will be supporting new economic and leadership opportunities for women as part of our plans to get the economy growing again.”The Honourable Patty Hajdu
