Gender equality takes the stage for Women's History Month

News Release

Government of Canada supports projects to advance gender equality

October 3, 2016 – Ottawa, ON – Status of Women Canada

The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Status of Women, kicked off Women’s History Month today by announcing Government of Canada support for projects to advance gender equality.

In February 2016, Status of Women Canada announced a call for proposals aimed at empowering women for political and community action. Approximately 45 community organizations have been selected to receive over $7 million in Government of Canada funding  for a dozen projects to create inclusive contexts to foster women’s participation and leadership in the democratic and public life of the country.

The Minister made the announcement at an event marking the launch of Women’s History Month, hosted by Status of Women Canada on Parliament Hill. The event highlighted this year’s theme for the month-long celebration — Because of Her. This theme pays tribute to the remarkable women who have helped shape Canadian history as activists, leaders, artists, academics, entrepreneurs, and more.

Throughout Women’s History month, the Government of Canada is retelling women's stories and inspiring the next generation of Canadians to carry on the important work that still needs to be done to achieve gender equality. Canadians are encouraged to join the conversation on social media by talking about the extraordinary women who have shaped their own history, using the hashtag #BecauseOfHer.
