Government of Canada amending Small Fishing Vessel Inspection Regulations to improve safety

News Release

New requirements to come into force in one year

July 13, 2016 – Ottawa, Ontario – Transport Canada

The commercial fishing industry significantly contributes to the economy of many small communities by providing employment opportunities; yet commercial fishing is one of the most dangerous occupations in the world.

The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, today announced several amendments to the Small Fishing Vessel Inspection Regulations that will enhance safety in the commercial fishing industry. The new regulations will update the current safety equipment and vessel stability requirements as well as introduce safe operating procedures for small fishing vessels.

The amended regulations published in Canada Gazette, Part II, today, are a result of extensive consultation with stakeholders, including fishing vessel owners, provincial and territorial safety groups and representatives of fishing safety associations from coast to coast to coast.

Fishing vessel owners will have one year to familiarize themselves and get up-to-date with the new requirements before the new regulations come into force. In the meantime, the current regulations will remain in force.

Quote

"The Government of Canada is committed to working with partners and stakeholders to ensure safe commercial fishing practices across the country. With these new regulations, small fishing vessels will be better equipped to operate safely, reducing fatalities, injuries and loss and damage to vessels."
The Honourable Marc Garneau
Minister of Transport
