Consulting Canadians and stakeholders to make the road safer for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers

Keeping all Canadians safe on our roads is a priority for the Government of Canada. We are committed to improving pedestrian and cyclist safety, particularly around heavy vehicles.
That’s why, in September 2016, the Minister of Transport, the Honourable Marc Garneau, created an intergovernmental task force that has been working on solutions to improve the safety of vulnerable road users.
Today, the task force launched an online public consultation to gather comments and input on strategies and preventive measures to better protect cyclists and pedestrians around heavy vehicles.
We invite:
- Pedestrians and cyclists;
- Heavy vehicle operators and their advocates;
- Public awareness committees;
- Those who build, own or manage municipal road infrastructure, including intersections, bridges, and rail crossings

The intergovernmental task force includes federal/provincial/territorial government officials, the Transportation Association of Canada, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities along with the assistance of the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, and an Advisory Panel made up of cycling, pedestrian and trucking advocates.

Heavy vehicles continue to pose a safety risk to pedestrians and cyclists. In September 2016, a commitment to examine how to better protect cyclists and pedestrians was made at the Council of Ministers of Transportation and Highway Safety meeting.
