Statement by the Minister of Transport on the commemorations marking the thirteenth anniversary of the Lac-Mégantic tragedy

The Minister of Transport and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, the Honourable Steven MacKinnon, issued the following statement today to commemorate the thirteenth anniversary of the Lac-Mégantic tragedy:

“Today, we remember the lives lost in the Lac-Mégantic tragedy and honour the victims, as well as their families, friends and loved ones whose lives have been forever changed.

“Thirteen years later, this remains a day of remembrance, reflection, and solidarity. Across Canada, we join the people of Lac-Mégantic in honouring the memory of those who were taken too soon and in acknowledging the profound loss that continues to be felt throughout the community.

“We also recognize the strength and resilience shown by the people of Lac-Mégantic over the years. Their courage continues to inspire Canadians.

“The Government of Canada remains steadfast in its support for the community. We are continuing our efforts to complete the Lac-Mégantic rail bypass project, which will move the railway out of downtown. Several key milestones have been reached over the past year, including the submission of the application for authorization to the Canadian Transportation Agency, an important step that brings the community closer to the project’s completion.

“The Government of Canada will continue to work closely with its partners to advance the project and keep the community of Lac-Mégantic and the surrounding area informed of the next steps.

“On this day of remembrance, and as Canadians are reminded of the importance of rail safety, we remain committed to strengthening Canada’s rail system so that communities can have confidence in the safe transportation of goods across our country.

“Today, and every day, we stand with the people of Lac-Mégantic in remembrance and in support.”
