Let’s keep Atlantic Canada’s story moving forward
By: Kevin Dubé, Director General, Communications, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
Just over a year ago, I shared with you in this forum the news that the Public Policy Forum dropped their Atlantic Canada Momentum Index, proving that Atlantic Canada is not just a pretty coastline but a powerhouse of positive economic change.
This was BIG news. It's like the region shouted, "Hey world, check us out!" And guess what? The world is finally paying attention.
Since then, more good news stories have been showing how resilient our region is and how industry-leading innovations and game-changing solutions are moving the dial. These stories are shining a spotlight on the people, businesses, and organizations behind the momentum—and serve as a poignant reminder of just how important it is to keep our momentum moving forward.
Today, the compelling narrative continues.
Indicators show that Atlantic Canada is once again poised to outperform the rest of the country in 2024.
- In Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador, 5 upcoming hydrogen power projects are forecasted to contribute over $215 billion to the region’s GDP, strengthening its position as a reliable supplier of green energy to the global economy.
- Between July 2022 and July 2023, the Maritimes’ population growth outpaced the rest of Canada, with immigration being the main source of that growth.
- During the same period, Newfoundland and Labrador’s population grew at its fastest rate in 50 years.
- Employment in Atlantic Canada increased by 3%, surpassing the national increase of 2.5%.
- The Atlantic Economic Council forecasts that economic growth in Atlantic Canada will be stronger than the rest of the country in 2024.
The wind is in our sails. And the compass is pointing toward a new and prosperous future for Atlantic Canada.
