Terms of use for WeatherCAN
WeatherCAN: terms of use for iOS devices
Background
Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) WeatherCAN App (“the App”) makes ECCC forecasts and alerts available on mobile devices through real-time weather data, forecasts and push notifications (such as weather alerts for watches and warnings), making our weather information more accessible to Canadians.
Although ECCC meteorologists make efforts to update forecasts and alerts throughout the day, 7 days a week, weather conditions in your location may differ from information available from ECCC. All forecasts and warnings are produced with the aid of technology including:
- computer models
- weather satellites
- Doppler radar
- ground weather stations including weather buoys
- weather balloon data
- lightning detection network
Acceptance of agreement
By using the App, you are agreeing to these terms of use (“Terms of Use”), as well as the Terms and conditions. These Terms of Use are a legal agreement between you and ECCC only and not Apple Inc. (Apple). The Terms of Use shall apply as long as you use the App and should be read carefully as they govern your use of the App and the relationship between you and ECCC. ECCC is solely responsible for the App and its content. You must exercise your judgement and carefully evaluate the content as ECCC will not be responsible for the consequences of any decisions or actions you take based on information provided in, or omitted from, any App content.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, ECCC expressly disclaims any liability for errors and omissions in the App’s content or for any losses that might result from your use of the App. In addition, neither ECCC nor Apple warrants that access to the App will be uninterrupted or error-free and neither will be responsible for your inability to use the App or for any malfunctions. What you need to know about air quality notifications
What is the Air Quality Health Index?
The Air Quality Health Index or "AQHI" is a scale designed to help you understand what the air quality around you means to your health. The AQHI is measured on a scale ranging from 1-10+. Learn more about the Air Quality Health Index.
When do AQHI notifications happen?
Once you have set up your notifications for a specific location and level of air quality, you will be notified when the air quality, compared to the previous hour:
- reaches your chosen AQHI level or higher
- goes below your chosen AQHI level after reaching it earlier
Choosing the right AQHI level for alerts
- You should choose your AQHI level using your own experience and symptoms as a guide
- If you are sensitive to air pollution, you may want to set notifications for the moderate risk category (4 to 6)
- If you are not sensitive to pollution, you may only want to set notifications for when AQHI reaches the high-risk category (7 to 10)
How often do you get AQHI notifications?
AQHI conditions are updated every hour. The number of AQHI notifications you get will depend on:
- how many locations you choose
- the AQHI level you choose for each location
How can I limit the number of alerts?
- turn off notifications for more than one location
- increase your chosen threshold of AQHI
Custom AQHI notifications are not air quality advisories
You can set your AQHI notifications for any value between 3 and 10+.
However, Special Air Quality Advisories only go out when there is a high level of health risk to the general population (when the AQHI reaches 7).
As a result, if you or someone in your care is sensitive to air pollution, it can be helpful to set AQHI alerts for lower levels, and to take precautions before the AQHI is too high.

Set up custom temperature notifications
Set up your own custom notifications for high and low temperatures, humidex and wind chill. You can set notifications for multiple locations at the same thresholds.
These custom notifications alert you when the observed temperature reaches, or the forecast temperature is expected to reach, your chosen value(s) so you can make informed decisions using up to date data.
- Open the WeatherCAN app.
- Tap on the ‘More’ tab in the lower right-hand corner of the display.
- Tap “Notifications”.
- Tap “Temperature”.
- Set the “Temperature Notifications” to On.
- Set the temperature, humidex, and/or wind chill from -60°C to 45°C by scrolling through the values and tapping on the desired value(s). These values will be applicable for all locations that you have turned on temperature notifications. Individual thresholds for each location cannot be set due to technical limitations.
- Select “All Locations” to receive notifications for your current location and all saved locations. Alternatively, select individual locations by setting them to On if you only want to receive notifications for certain sites.
