Commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

On December 10, 2023, we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), an enduring testament to the universal belief in the importance of upholding fundamental human rights for everyone, everywhere. Adopted in 1948, the values underlying the UDHR are reflected in the lived realities of each and every one of us, and they resonate today more than ever.

Throughout history, Canadians have stood at the forefront of the human rights movement, helping to shape a more inclusive Canada. Among them stands John P. Humphrey, a distinguished Canadian lawyer and professor. His role in crafting the UDHR laid a foundation for ongoing Canadian efforts to champion and safeguard human rights, both nationally and on the global stage.

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms draws profound inspiration from the Declaration, evoking global ideals and the goal of achieving a brighter, more equitable future for all. At its heart, the Charter embodies the principles of equality, justice and freedom, guiding the Government of Canada's efforts to help build a more inclusive and cohesive society.

This anniversary is an opportunity to learn about the field of human rights and the pioneers who have helped advance the cause, reflect on how far we have come as a democratic society, and acknowledge that there is still much to be done to address inequalities and challenges faced by people in Canada.

Protecting and advancing respect for human rights, both at home and abroad, still resonates 75 years later as a collective duty and a cornerstone of our Canadian identity.

UDHR75 calls upon everyone to stand up for human rights and work to ensure no one is left behind. We all have a role to play.
