Ramadan 2024: A Message from the Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia

March 11, 2024

For many Muslims observing Ramadan in Canada, the sacred month represents more than just fasting and prayer. It is a time for increased reflection, charity and gratitude.

Ramadan is a time where we feel heightened empathy with those who are less fortunate than us, near and far, and where we take it upon ourselves to make a positive difference wherever we can. When anyone hurts, we all hurt.

This year, Muslims in Canada are particularly impacted by the war in Gaza, which has caused continuous anguish and sorrow within our diverse communities. During Ramadan, when the focus is on unity, peace and solidarity, it is essential to recognize the pain and concerns that weigh heavy on the hearts of many.

This time of the year also reminds us that each one of us has a responsibility to be better and to do better for ourselves and for others. We must continue to stand together to advance our shared values of respect, dignity and mutual understanding.

For the coming thirty days, I encourage employers and educational institutions across Canada to be proactive in supporting their Muslim employees and students observing Ramadan.

Together, we can continue to contribute to a Canada that is inclusive and safe for everyone. Ramadan Mubarak!
