Snowflake Kingdom

There’s a perimeter around the play area where all kinds of obstacles are positioned. The goal is to aim and get adversaries with the soft foam balls. It’s like throwing snowballs without hurting anyone. Now, that’s real fun! Games are monitored by facilitators to ensure the safety of participants and to time the games. Now, let's have some Flurry winter fun! Participants must measure 120 cm (48 inches) minimally for this activity.

This adventure takes place in the Snowflake Kingdom. To start, children learn how to handle tools and are guided by facilitators during the activity. In an enormous block of ice, they start by searching for their targeted conquests. They first practice their sense of observation, then their patience, perseverance and determination. These attitudes are all essential for the activity. Imagine your children’s pride when they reach their target! The Winterlude reward is theirs to keep when it’s in their hands. Now there’s a wonderful opportunity for your children to learn while having fun outside this winter!

Immerse yourself in the beautiful music of throat singing while taking shelter in an igloo. Traditionally, throat singing took place when women carried their babies in their amautis, the parka worn by Inuit women. The sound and vibrations would help soothe the child to sleep. Today, throat singing is becoming popular once again and is a fun pastime. When two voices are singing, they are in competition. The first throat singer to laugh loses.

Traditionally, men from many Indigenous peoples of Canada and the North participated in skill challenges to prepare themselves physically and mentally for fishing and hunting big game. Today, many schools and community centers in the North continue the tradition of the snow snake game. In schools, Indigenous youth learn about the history of this ancestral tradition. They’re also shown the active and healthy lifestyle such as practised by their ancestors. It’s also during the Arctic Winter Games that Indigenous athletes participate as teams in the snow snake challenge. Since 2004, all members of Indigenous peoples of the North across the world can take part. Every team prepares their snake slide path. The athletes often push their snow snake for more than 90 meters! As was the case for their ancestors, such achievements are a proud demonstration of skills, strength, endurance and speed.

Tug of war is a true and friendly combat of strength between 2 teams. Try it out for great fun this winter with family and friends in Snowflake Kingdom. Facilitators will be there during the 3 weekends of Winterlude to explain and referee the tug-of-war combats. Come to have fun! With just a rope and brute strength, this sport has been practised across the world for centuries. For fun or for a friendly combat, competitions and international championships allow amateur and professional athletes to prove their team’s strength. Tug of war was even an Olympic sport from 1900 to 1920!
