We are writing to encourage all Defence Team members to view an important event in our transformative journey and on-going efforts to address historic injustice experienced by military members, past and present.

On July 9, 2022 in Truro Nova Scotia, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and Department of National Defence (DND) will offer a national apology to relatives and descendants of No. 2 Construction Battalion for the treatment members of the Battalion endured, and to honour and celebrate its importance to the history of the CAF. During this event, No. 2 Construction Battalion will be presented with the Battle Honour “France and Flanders 1917-18”, an additional step towards reconciliation.

How to view:

No. 2 Construction Battalion is an important part of the history of the Canadian Army and of Canada. The members supported lumber operations, provided power and water to camps in France, and helped in the construction of a logging railway. More than 600 Battalion members served with loyalty and dedication, yet were underappreciated and treated unfairly by the country they volunteered to serve. We must remember them and recognize their contribution and bravery, and address the racial discrimination they suffered.

Racism continues to be present in our society and every Defence Team member has a role in making our collective culture more inclusive and empathetic, and one in which all members, current and future, are treated fairly and with respect.

By joining the National Apology, our Defence community can show their support and take a stand in the fight against racism.
