The week of 9-15 October has been designated fire prevention week 2022. This year's theme “Fire won’t wait plan your escape” Highlights the importance of working together with people with whom you live and work to be better prepared to prevent and survive a fire in your home or workplace.

Over the past year, fire losses in the military community have dropped significantly, mirroring a general trend within the larger Canadian population. The Canadian Forces Fire Marshal is also very proud to announce that, no fire related death has been reported since 2004. Although, we must remain vigilant to continue to prevent fire losses, injuries and deaths. Therefore, it is important that the Defence Team regularly review its fire safety practices.

Statistics for this year show an increase in the number of fire incident in residential family dwellings implicating devices powered by lithium Ion batteries. Always follow manufacturer’s instructions that come with the device and only use the battery that is designed for the device.

During fire prevention week, everyone is encouraged to team up with family to complete a fire safety inspection of your home, spotting potential dangers, and developing and practicing a fire escape plan in order to be prepared to react correctly if a fire strikes.

Take time to visit your CAF/DND fire department for information on fire safety practices.
