DND’s Student Experience Testimonial: Amina El Sharif

Amina El Sharif

My name is Amina and I am a 20 year-old student working at the Department of National Defence (DND). I am of North African background and bilingual in English and Arabic. I am attending Carleton University, studying Global and International Studies with a specialization in Global Politics and a minor in Communication and Media Studies. Outside of school, I like to spend time with my family and friends, often exploring new food spots with them. I also enjoy going to the gym and traveling on my free time.

I got my job at DND through the Federal Student Experience Work Program (FSWEP), a program that provides opportunities for students at all levels in all programs of study. I come from a North African background and I proudly identified as such on my FSWEP application.  I work at Assistant Deputy Minister (Review Services) under the Director General Internal Audit (DGA) on the Professional Practice Group (PPG) team. I have been working with my team since May 2022 and will be completing my 2^nd student work term by the end of December 2022. Some of my duties include revamping our current SharePoint site and re-creating professional templates that auditors can use when completing projects.

This is my first job within the federal government, and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome as I work for an incredibly supportive team. In addition to the work experience they provide me, my team continues to include me in various event opportunities that help bring our team closer and keep the team morale high!

What’s next for me? I want to keep learning more about our department, what it does, and become better-rounded so I can thrive in my role.
