More Support Services for Defence Community Members Affected by Sexual Misconduct

March 27, 2023 - Defence Stories

The Sexual Misconduct Support and Resource Centre’s (SMSRC) new Community Support for Sexual Misconduct Survivors Grant Program has named 30 community-based organizations as recipients of funding for 32 projects. Through these organizations, the SMSRC is providing a variety of support services and resources in locations across Canada for those affected by sexual misconduct.

A greater range of support services

This program was developed based on the request from survivors for an increased range of culturally competent, specialized care and support services outside the CAF healthcare system. The organizations funded through the Grant Program will provide more options for those affected by sexual misconduct in the wider Defence community.

The Grant Program also aims to provide services tailored to the specific needs of various demographics, including those in rural and remote areas, Black people, Indigenous people, other racialized groups, linguistic minorities, persons with disabilities, 2SLGBTQI+, and those who may not be able to access support in person.

Expansion

The SMSRC has been funding eight sexual assault centres that operate near major CAF bases through a Contribution Program. That program expires on March 31, 2023 and has been replaced by the new Grant Program that is funding 32 projects related to serving the Defence community.

The funded organizations are located across Canada. They will deliver on an array of initiatives, including counselling, outreach, education, resource navigation, peer support, research, and others like equine therapy and retreats.
