Government highlights investments in defence infrastructure in Quebec

As outlined in Canada’s defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged, the Government of Canada is committed to providing the women and men of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) with modern facilities in which to work and train.
Today, Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, on behalf of Harjit S. Sajjan, Defence Minister; and Joël Lightbound, Member of Parliament for Louis-Hébert, participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new armoury in Sainte-Foy, Que. This project represented a $22-million investment in Reserve infrastructure and economic benefits for the local community, having created about 50 jobs during construction.
The new 4,000-m2 armoury will provide the 35e Régiment du Génie de combat with the necessary space to train and conduct operations effectively. The two-storey building includes storage areas, office space, classrooms, and a parade area.
The construction of a new facility for the 430 Tactical Helicopter Squadron’s logistics support unit at Base Valcartier was also highlighted. The $11.5-million project will deliver a new 1,849-m2 building to consolidate the unit in one location, and enhance its ability to support the Squadron’s operations. Construction of the new facility began in May 2018, and is expected to generate about 48 jobs until its completion in early 2022.

A $10.8-million contract was awarded to Pomerleau Inc., for the construction of the new armoury in Sainte-Foy, as well as the demolition of 42 surplus housing units.

A contract valued at $5.5 million was awarded to Construction Côté et Fils Inc., for the construction of the new logistics support facility at Base Valcartier.

Completed in April 2018, the new armoury was designed to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver standards, and incorporates green building concepts to minimize its footprint.

Together, these projects will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from Defence buildings and non-military vehicles by 40 percent (from 2005 levels) by 2030.
