Measles & Rubella Weekly Monitoring Report - Week 10, 2019: March 3 to March 9, 2019

  • In Canada, four new cases of measles and no new cases of rubella were reported in week 10, 2019.

Epidemiological summary

During epidemiological week 10, 2019 four new laboratory-confirmed cases of measles and no new cases of rubella were reported in CanadaFootnote 2. Two cases were reported by the province of British Columbia, of which one case was linked to the Vancouver outbreak and the other case was acquired during travel to Oregon in the United States. Both cases had rash onset in epidemiological week 10. The third case was reported by the province of Ontario and was acquired during travel to Cambodia/Thailand. The week of rash onset was epidemiological week 9. The last case was reported by the Northwest Territories with rash onset in week 9 and was linked to a previously reported case from the region.

To date in 2019, twenty-six cases of measles and no cases of rubella have been reported. The last case of rubella was reported in 2016 and the last case of congenital rubella syndrome/infection was reported in September 2018.

Laboratory summary

Measles

In 2019, eighteen (18) cases of measles have been genotyped and the genotypes were B3 (n=7) and D8 (n=11).

In week 10, three measles cases were genotyped. Two cases from British Columbia, related to the Vancouver outbreak, with rash onsets in epidemiological weeks 8 and 9, were genotype D8, all identical to the WHO named strain MVs/Gir Somnath.IND/42.16/ (GenBank accession number KY120864), the strain associated with the outbreak. The case reported from Ontario, with rash onset in week 9 and associated with travel to Pakistan, was genotype B3.
