Measles & Rubella Weekly Monitoring Report – Week 21: May 19 to May 25, 2019

  • In Canada, seven new cases of measles and no new cases of rubella were reported in week 21, 2019.
  • Currently, there are thirteen activeFootnote 1 cases of measles in Canada.
  • Sixty-one (61) cases of measles and no cases of rubella have been reported in Canada in 2019. These cases were reported by Québec, British Columbia, the Northwest Territories, Ontario, Alberta, and New Brunswick.

Epidemiological summary

During epidemiological week 21, 2019 seven new confirmed cases of measles and no new cases of rubella were reported in CanadaFootnote 2. Six cases were reported by the province of New Brunswick: all were exposed to a previously reported case from New Brunswick and the onset of rash occurred in epidemiological week 21 for all six cases. The seventh case reported by the province of Ontario, with rash onset in epidemiological week 20, was acquired while travelling to Germany and France.

To date in 2019, 61 cases of measles and no cases of rubella have been reported. The last case of rubella was reported in 2016 and the last case of congenital rubella syndrome/infection was reported in September 2018.

Laboratory summary

Measles

In 2019, forty-four (44) cases of measles have been genotyped and the genotypes were B3 (n=15) and D8 (n=29), both of which are circulating globally.

In week 21, one measles case was genotyped. The case was reported by the province of Québec with rash onset in epidemiological week 18 and travel history to France. It was genotype B3, distinct from other genotype B3 strains detected in Canada in 2019.
