Measles & Rubella Weekly Monitoring Report – Week 6, 2019: February 3 to February 9, 2019

Key Points

  • In Canada, two new cases of measles and no new cases of rubella were reported in week 6, 2019.
  • Currently, there are four activeFootnote 1 cases of measles in Canada.
  • Five (5) cases of measles and no cases of rubella have been reported in Canada in 2019.
  • A number of confirmed cases of measles were reported in mid-February in British Columbia, most of which were associated with a cluster of related school-based outbreaks in Vancouver that were linked to importation of measles from outside of North America. Measles cases related to this cluster will be included in subsequent reports.
  • Globally, there are large measles outbreaks reported across Europe which have affected a large number of countries. Canadians travelling to Europe and Venezuela are invited to consult the travel health notices for more information.

Epidemiological summary

During epidemiological week 6, 2019 two new laboratory-confirmed cases of measles and no new cases of rubella were reported in CanadaFootnote 2. Both measles cases were reported by the province of British Columbia. The first case was in a traveller returning from the Philippines, with rash onset in epidemiological week 5. The second case was in an individual with no travel history outside of British Columbia, with rash onset in epidemiological week 6

To date in 2019, five cases of measles and no cases of rubella have been reported. The last case of rubella was reported in 2016 and the last case of congenital rubella syndrome/infection was reported in September 2018.

Laboratory summary

Measles

In 2019, three cases of measles have been genotyped and the genotypes were B3 (n=1) and D8 (n=2).

The measles case that was acquired while travelling to Ukraine with rash onset in week 5 was genotype D8, identical to the WHO named strain MVs/Gir Somnath.IND/42.16/ (GenBank accession number KY120864). This measles strain has been reported globally from many countries.
