Measles & Rubella Weekly Monitoring Report - Week 7, 2019: February 10 to February 16, 2019

Key Points

In Canada, three new cases of measles and no new cases of rubella were reported in week 7, 2019.
Currently, there are five active^{Footnote 1} cases of measles in Canada.
Eight (8) cases of measles and no cases of rubella have been reported in Canada in 2019. These cases were reported by the provinces of Québec and British Columbia.
A number of confirmed cases of measles were reported in mid-February in British Columbia, most of which were associated with a cluster of related school-based outbreaks in Vancouver that were linked to importation of measles from outside of North America. Additional measles cases related to this cluster will be included in subsequent reports.
Globally, there are large measles outbreaks which have affected a large number of countries. Canadians travelling outside of Canada are invited to consult the travel health notices for more information.

Epidemiological summary

During epidemiological week 7, 2019 three new laboratory-confirmed cases of measles and no new cases of rubella were reported in Canada^{Footnote 2}. All three measles cases were reported by the province of British Columbia and involved travellers returning from Vietnam. One case had rash onset in epidemiological week 4 and two cases had rash onset in epidemiological week 5.

To date in 2019, eight cases of measles and no cases of rubella have been reported. The last case of rubella was reported in 2016 and the last case of congenital rubella syndrome/infection was reported in September 2018.

Laboratory summary

Measles

In 2019, five cases of measles have been genotyped and the genotypes were B3 (n=2) and D8 (n=3).

Both measles cases genotyped this week were from cases reported by the province of British Columbia. The measles case in a traveler returning from the Philippines, with rash onset in epidemiological week 5, was genotype B3. The second case, an individual with no travel history outside of British Columbia and with rash onset in epidemiological week 6 was genotype D8, identical to the WHO named strain MVs/Gir Somnath.IND/42.16/ (GenBank accession number KY120864), a strain that has been reported globally from many countries.
