Organizations offering education and training

These organizations have information on a variety of topics, including requirements and obligations of charitable registration, fundraising practices, receipting, books and records, and more.

These organizations were funded by the Canada Revenue Agency under the Charities Partnership and Outreach Program.

Local sources of help and support

There are many sources of information, help, and support for charities in their own communities.  Examples include:

Hospitals

Many hospitals have volunteer programs and associations. Registered charities involved in health-related activities can contact their local hospital volunteer groups for information.

Libraries

Most communities have a volunteer network, or something similar, that links volunteers to organizations needing help. Your local library is a good place to start researching community services and programs.

Municipal and regional governments

Municipal and regional governments may have committees (arts, culture, health, and social services) or other departments that offer advice or funding.

Schools and student volunteers

Some secondary schools have volunteer programs that link students to organizations needing help. In some jurisdictions, secondary school students have to do a certain amount of volunteer work within their community to graduate.

Universities and colleges

Many universities and colleges offer programs in non-profit and volunteer management.

Provincial and territorial governments

In addition to federal regulations, each province and territory may have legislation that charities have to follow. For example, some provinces and territories regulate business activities, fundraising, internal governance, and the use of charitable property.
