2e Bataillon, Royal 22e Régiment

Royal 22e Regiment Badge

2e Battalion, Royal 22e Régiment (2 R22eR), is a mechanized infantry battalion. Its role is to generate and train versatile troops, capable of operating in the full spectrum of operations. 2 R22eR is among the top Canadian infantry units.

Composed of three infantry companies, one headquarters company with a reconnaissance platoon, one sniper platoon and a service company, 2 R22eR has faced numerous operational challenges over the years. Even though its mechanized infantry unit mandate gives it a certain expertise with light armoured vehicles (LAV III), 2 R22eR can quickly be called to provide light support (on foot) when the situation warrants.

2 R22eR’s home station is the Citadelle de Québec. The Citadelle is a fortress that sits atop Cap Diamant in Quebec City. Located next to the Plains of Abraham, it is an integral part of Old Quebec’s fortifications. The preservation of its fortifications makes Quebec City the only walled city in North America.

The mandate of 2 R22eR is to ensure the security of the Citadelle de Québec and manage the tourism and historical aspects of the Garde en Rouge (Ceremonial Guard) each summer. The Commanding Officer of 2 R22eR, living in the Citadelle, actively takes part in all protocol-related duties for various ceremonies like the Freedom of the City, Remembrance Day at the Cross of Sacrifice, official visits and for the Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec.

1st Battalion 3rd Canadian Infantry Regiment was stood up on June 1, 1945, to serve with the Pacific force. When this force was dissolved on September 2, 1945, the unit became 2e Battalion, Royal 22e Regiment and then the Royal 22e Régiment on September 30, 1946.

On August 5, 1950, Canada formed a special contingent, contributing to the United Nations forces fighting in Korea. 2 R22eR was raised and started training in Valcartier.

The official history of 2 R22eR can be found at the Directorate of History and Heritage website.
