Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs

Represents the riding of Yukon

Brendan Hanley, Member of Parliament for Yukon, was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs on June 5, 2025. A physician by training, Hanley brings over 25 years of experience working in Northern, remote, and underserved communities across Canada and abroad.

Before entering politics, Hanley served as Yukon’s Chief Medical Officer of Health from 2008 to 2021, where he led public health efforts and was a key voice during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has also worked with Doctors Without Borders in conflict zones across Africa and Asia.

He holds a medical degree from the University of Alberta, a diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the University of Liverpool, and a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University.

He was elected to Parliament in 2021, focusing on improving health equity, supporting Northern infrastructure, and advancing climate resilience in Arctic communities. He is a member of the Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs and several interparliamentary groups.

As Parliamentary Secretary, Brendan Hanley advocates for sustainable development, Indigenous partnerships, and responsive federal policy for Canada’s Northern and Arctic regions.
