Dockage assessment is a key part of the grain grading process.

It is important to understand proper assessment procedures, because the result could affect the final payment you receive for your grain.

Dockage is defined as any material mixed with a sample that can and must be separated from the sample before a grade is assigned.

Dockage should also be removed before determining test weight or performing any analytical test.

Before processing a sample, make sure your machine is clear of any debris.

To assess dockage in wheat, the Carter dockage machine should be set up with:

(Montage: Inspector setting the Carter dockage machine)

A number 4 air control, a number 6 feed control, a number 6 buckwheat sieve in the top position, a number 5 buckwheat sieves in the centre and bottom positions, and a number 25 riddle.

(Montage: Inspector pouring a sample into the Boerner-type divider as text appears on screen)

Using a Boerner-type divider, divide the uncleaned sample to obtain a representative portion that weighs 1 kg.

Turn on the machine and pour the representative portion into the hopper.

As the sample passes through the machine, the riddle removes larger material and the aspiration fan removes lighter material.

Smaller material works its way through the series of sieves and is collected in the bottom pan.

(Montage: Inspector turning off the Carter dockage machine)

After the sample has passed through the machine, turn on the sieve cleaner control for 2 seconds to remove kernels lodged in the sieves. Turn off the machine…

and lightly snap the retainer rod of the aspiration pan to loosen material gathered on the air screen.

Collect the 3 catch pans which contain dockage material. This includes material other than wheat removed by the number 25 riddle, material removed by the number. 5 buckwheat sieve in the bottom position and material removed by aspiration.

(Montage: Inspector measures dockage using a scale)

This material is weighed and calculated to the nearest tenth of a percent.

(Montage: Inspector removing sample from sieves)

Wheat from the 3 other catch pans is combined to form the clean sample.

Your sample is now ready to be graded.
