A workplace of innovation and opportunity

At Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC), innovation and growth aren't just buzzwords, they're an everyday experience. When it comes to Tara Latreille's and Julie Mercier's careers, 2 dedicated professionals with a combined 25 years of service, PSPC's commitment to innovation, professional development and work-life balance shines through.

For Tara Latreille, Client Experience Supervisor at the Government of Canada Pension Centre in the National Capital Region (NCR), the first word that comes to mind when thinking of PSPC is innovation. "PSPC constantly seeks new ways to improve public services to meet the needs of Canadians more efficiently," she explains. "This forward-thinking approach not only enhances the quality of services but also ensures that PSPC stays ahead in a rapidly changing world."

Julie Mercier, a Building Mechanical Technician Supervisor, also in the NCR, echoes this sentiment through her hands-on work in building operations. From the moment she starts her day, Mercier is on the move. She could be checking heating and air conditioning, inspecting fire systems for leaks or damage, while also managing the inventory of the health and safety equipment. "I also purchase the needed equipment, fill out work orders or enter financial and human resources data. No 2 workdays are the same," she says, highlighting the dynamic nature of her role and the department's responsiveness to evolving challenges.

Both Latreille and Mercier emphasize PSPC's supportive work environment. "The department promotes a culture of collaboration and support, offering various programs and resources for professional development, mental health and work-life balance," says Latreille.

PSPC's dedication to employee well-being is another key factor that makes it an employer of choice. "The department promotes a healthy work-life balance through various wellness initiatives, and offers flexible work arrangements," says Latreille, a mother of 5 children. "This approach allows employees to manage their professional responsibilities while also enjoying their personal lives."

Employees also have access to a wide range of initiatives like the Workplace Mental Health Program, Career Management Services, Disability Management and Individual Workplace Accommodations, as well as counselling services through the Employee and Organization Assistance Program.

A launchpad for professional growth

Career development is a cornerstone of the PSPC experience. Latreille credits her professional growth to the opportunities provided by the department. "I've had the chance to take on challenging projects, collaborate at all levels and participate in training programs. These experiences have enhanced my skills in project management and leadership."

Mercier's journey from apprentice to supervisor is a great example of PSPC's commitment to internal advancement. "I started at the entry level and moved up through training, assessments and experience. Even now, I'm still learning every day and taking courses to maintain my skills."

Mercier shares Latreille's perspective on PSPC's learning support. "They gave me the opportunity to practice my profession in a predominantly male environment. When I started working for PSPC, there were very few women in this field. PSPC allowed me to grow and learn."

When asked why they would recommend PSPC to a friend, both Latreille and Mercier highlighted the department's many strengths. "PSPC is a dynamic and forward-thinking department that values innovation and collaboration," says Latreille. Mercier adds, "The work is meaningful and impactful. PSPC offers a good work environment. It's a vast department with jobs in various disciplines."
