Automatic tax filing consultation

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is working to make tax filing easier by offering a variety of services to reduce barriers to filing an income tax and benefit return.

Many vulnerable Canadians with a lower income are still missing out on valuable benefit and credit payments because they are not filing an annual tax return. Automatic tax filing services, such as the CRA’s SimpleFile, are an effective way for the CRA to help individuals with a lower income file their tax returns.

The CRA is consulting individuals, community organizations, academia, and the tax filing industry to help shape the future of automatic tax filing in Canada.

Consultation activities

To help more Canadians get the benefits designed to support them, the CRA will look for broad input through an online questionnaire. The CRA has also formed an advisory group and will engage community organizations and tax industry representatives to explore opportunities to expand and improve automatic tax filing.

How to participate

You can share your input by completing the online questionnaire, available from September 9 to October 9, 2025, on our consultation page: Automatic tax filing consultation questionnaire
