Shyloh van Delft

Shyloh was born and raised in the Yukon Territory as a 4th generation Canadian of western European descent with multi-generational kinship ties to the Tahltan Nation.

After completing high school, Shyloh stayed in the Yukon to earn a B.Sc. in Environmental and Conservation Sciences, with a major in Northern Systems, through a partnership between University of Alberta and Yukon University. She returned to this academic partnership in Fall 2024 to begin her Master’s degree. In collaboration with community partners including the Ta'an Kwäch'än Council, Kwanlin Dün First Nation, and Yukon Wildland Fire Management, her research aims to examine the ecological impacts of wildfire prevention strategies in the Yukon. Specifically, she will study how tree cavity-using species respond to FireSmart, shelterwood and partial retention treatments to forest fuels. Her research will support wildfire risk prevention planning to retain effectiveness while strengthening alignment with environmental stewardship goals.

Shyloh has 17 years of experience in the environmental field. She has served as a volunteer on the boards of several environmental community organizations including in the role of President, and regularly volunteers as a contributor, educator, bird-bander, and community science coordinator within the birding community. Shyloh has extensive experience with wildlife research and scientific communication through her work as a biologist, technician, research assistant, and interpreter with federal and territorial governments, academic institutions and non-government organizations. The achievements Shyloh is most proud of are her two young daughters, with whom she shares her passion for community and the environment.
