How to become a third-party service provider to the CRA

If you are a new third-party service provider that wants to send Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) payment files to the CRA, you must follow the process outlined below to be become as an EDI remitter. 

  1. Contact a listed trading partner to inquire if they will accept your company as a third-party service provider to the CRA.

    The trading partners are:

    • BMO
    • Central 1 Credit Union 
    • CIBC
    • Desjardins
    • National Bank 
    • RBC
    • Scotiabank
    • TD Bank

  2. Make the necessary arrangements with the trading partner who will provide the required EDI documentation and support to complete your initial EDI set-up for CRA remittances.

  3. When your company’s EDI set up is complete, the trading partner will coordinate the sending of a test file to the CRA for each remittance that your company will be sending the CRA.

  4. The CRA will retrieve, review, and advise your trading partner contact of the test file(s) results.

  5. Once you receive confirmation that the test file(s) was/were successful, you can start sending production EDI files on behalf of your clients.

The following criteria must be met before a new third-party service provider can be added to the list of providers on the Pay through a third-party service provider - Payments to the CRA - Canada.ca page:

Terms of use
Time

Minimum of 1 full year of remittances to the CRA without issues

Frequency At least twice a month
Volume or value

Minimum 5,000 transactions per month or minimum $10,000,000 per month

Note: CRA may request your company’s statistics on volumes and values by CRA revenue line at any time.

Website A company’s dedicated website

Current contact information must be available for your company at all times.

The CRA must be advised if your company is sold, ceases operation, changes name, requires contact or URL updates.

If your company meets the criteria listed above, or you wish to make changes to your company’s contact information, click on the Application to be listed on the Canada Revenue Agency's website.

Your company will be removed from the CRA website for any of the following reasons:

  • any misuse of the Canada wordmark and government flag symbol logo
  • misrepresentation of the relationship status with the CRA
  • critical EDI file transmission issues
