SSC’s CANChat brings innovation to life at CIRNAC

CANChat is sparking a surge of excitement across government—our generative AI chatbot service has officially landed at Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC), unlocking a powerful, Canadian-built GenAI tool for every employee.

Over the past few months, Shared Services Canada (SSC) has been working closely with CIRNAC to bring its secure, sovereign generative AI service into their hands. With this forward-looking move, CIRNAC is diving into a new era of experimentation, innovation and digital momentum.

That’s the kind of momentum we love to see.

“At SSC, we’re committed to strengthening the GC at every turn. By harnessing responsible, secure and ethical AI use, we’re equipping public servants with the tools they need to work faster and more effectively. Instead of getting bogged down by routine tasks, they can focus on what truly matters—supporting Canadians.”

Scott Taylor, Director General, Digital Enablement and Science Innovation, SSC

More than just cool tech

CANChat is giving CIRNAC room to experiment, modernize and rethink how work gets done in ways that weren’t possible before.

For CIRNAC employees, working with Indigenous partners means collaborating on complex files, dense research and time‑sensitive information. It’s important work—and it demands time, clarity and focus.

That’s where CANChat is already making a difference.

It’s about giving employees more space to do the work that matters most: building meaningful results with Indigenous communities across Canada. CIRNAC is committed to Indigenous data sovereignty, ensuring that Indigenous information is managed responsibly and never used to replace Indigenous input, reflecting respect, partnership and self-determination.

“CIRNAC is excited to expand our innovation and experimentation capacities with the CANChat service. This cutting‑edge, Canadian-made tool is a game‑changer that’s empowering public servants to unlock their full potential and drive transformative change across our department.”

Mélanie Copeland, Director, Digital Transformation Office, CIRNAC

Turning “someday” innovation into right-now impact

As more departments are onboarded to join the 23 already using the CANChat service, we’re watching a broader shift take shape across the GC. Innovation that once felt years away is now part of everyday workflows—helping employees work smarter, solve problems faster and dedicate time to the human‑centred tasks that matter most.

And as SSC employees, we’re proud of that. It’s what we do!
