Statistics Canada (StatCan) has extended its Survey on Sexual Misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) to January 26, 2023.

The purpose of this survey is to get an up-to-date picture of the issue of sexual misconduct in the CAF and to measure progress of institutional efforts to prevent and address sexual misconduct. The survey asks a series of questions to determine the prevalence and nature of sexual misconduct in the CAF in the last 12 months and to gauge awareness of pertinent policies, programs and support mechanisms.

For this survey, StatCan has issued invitations by email and mail to more than 83,000 eligible Regular Force and Primary Reserve personnel using contact information pulled from the CAF human resources management system (Guardian). The majority of members are eligible for this survey; however, there are some exclusions (see StatCan information page for the survey for more info).

The invitations include a unique link for each member to access the survey. All information provided to Statistics Canada will be kept confidential and only used for statistical purposes. The survey is voluntary but personnel are strongly encouraged to take time to share their views. All members' perspectives are important, whether or not they have been directly affected by sexual misconduct.

When the collection period is complete, StatCan will analyse the data and compare it with data collected in previous iterations of the survey conducted in 2016 and 2018. The updated data will help DND/CAF determine what changes have occurred, the impact of initiatives to date, and areas that may require a more targeted approach. StatCan anticipates it will be in a position to release the final report in summer/fall 2023.

DND/CAF is working hard to foster a safe and inclusive workplace culture for all Defence Team members. The input of military members and DND public service employees is essential to understanding the issues and shaping solutions. The Survey on Sexual Misconduct in the CAF is one of many ways that military members can share their experiences and contribute to the overall effort. Public Servants at DND are not part of the target population for this survey; however they do have the opportunity to participate in the Public Service Employee Survey, which includes questions about workplace harassment and discrimination.

If you are eligible to participate, you should have received an invitation by now. If you have not received an invitation and you would like to participate in the survey, visit the StatCan Information for survey participants web page.

Don't miss your chance to contribute to this important initiative to improve the well-being of CAF members and the entire Defence Team.

If you have questions on the survey, contact StatCan for more information.
