Exercise MAPLE RESOLVE 22: Canadians and allies successfully tackle new challenges and complexities

News release

May 22, 2022 – Wainwright, Alberta – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

Today, more than 3,200 soldiers from Canada, United States, and the United Kingdom successfully completed Exercise MAPLE RESOLVE 22 (Ex MR 22), which began here on May 10, 2022.

As the premier Canadian Army collective training event of the year, Ex MR 22 validated the skills of Canadian Army leaders and soldiers in the contemporary operating environment through a force-on-force exercise. This year was the first utilisation of the Decisive Action Training Environment (DATE) Europe scenario. DATE Europe focuses on creating a scenario centred on a deteriorating security situation in Eastern Europe.

This comprehensive and complex Canadian Army training event, designed and developed by the Wainwright-based Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, will make personnel from 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (2 CMBG) ready to support the Canadian Army’s operational commitments, and Strong, Secure, Engaged: Canada’s defence policy.

Quotes

“Our Canadian Armed Forces are always ready to serve in both domestic and international missions. Exercise MAPLE RESOLVE 22 (Ex MR 22) is a great example of the commitment of our members to operational readiness and interoperability with our partners and allies. I personally visited, with Chief of the Defence Staff, General Wayne Eyre, 3rd Canadian Division Support Base Detachment Wainwright and met with CAF and allied armed forces members participating in Ex MR 22. I would like to once again thank all our CAF members for their exceptional work to prepare for, and help Canadians both in Canada and around the world.”

The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of National Defence

“I am incredibly proud of the work of 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (2 CMBG) put in this year in preparation and completion of Exercise MAPLE RESOLVE 22 challenged our combined arms teams in a dynamic force-on-force scenario. 2 CMBG continuously trains to maintain and improve its war-fighting skills, and is ready and able to respond to the needs of the Government of Canada.

Colonel Eric Landry, Commander, 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group

“The Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre designs and executes collective training exercises around the world creating realistic challenges and complexities. Exercise MAPLE RESOLVE 22 was the first Exercise MAPLE RESOLVE to utilize the DATE Europe scenario, which painted a realistic picture for our soldiers to train their warfighting skills, conduct full-spectrum operations, and integrate with key partners and allied forces.”

Colonel Patrick Robichaud, Commander, Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre

Quick facts

  • Exercise MAPLE RESOLVE challenges soldiers in an environment that closely models modern conflict, complete with simulated villages populated with professional actors, simulated media, and social media environments.

  • Approximately 1,800 members of 2 CMBG, 680 U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve, and National Guard soldiers, and 20 U.S. Marines participated in or supported the exercise. Other participants include 150 members from the British Army and other enablers from the Canadian Army and Royal Canadian Air Force for a total force of more than 3,200 personnel.

  • The Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre provides realistic and dynamic training. The Centre’s weapons effects simulation technology, purpose-built urban infrastructure, role-playing civilians and resident opposing force contribute to the Canadian Army’s readiness to conduct domestic and international operations in a variety of environments.

  • DATE Europe is a component of the Canadian Army Modernization Strategy and a necessary evolution to provide soldiers with a training environment reflective of today’s global security concerns.

  • DATE Europe focuses on creating a scenario centred on a deteriorating security situation in Eastern Europe. It theoretically proposes a situation where the Baltic States are invaded from the east by a fictional force (DONOVIA) and NATO is required to respond.

  • DATE Europe was not designed with the intent of preparing Canadian Army soldiers for a specific deployment. However, the realistic scenario exposes soldiers to the geo-political situation in the region which will better prepare them for a deployment like Operation REASSURANCE, which is the Canadian Armed Forces contribution to NATO’s assurance and deterrence measures in Central and Eastern Europe.
