Government of Canada and Government of Prince Edward Island invest to support upgrades at Amalgamated Dairies Limited

Food processors rely on modern equipment to remain competitive, enhance efficiency and boost productivity. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever that they have access to the necessary support to ensure they are well-positioned for the future.

Today, the Member of Parliament for Egmont, Bobby Morrissey, on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, joined Prince Edward Island (PEI) Minister of Agriculture and Land, Bloyce Thompson to announce a joint investment of more than $2.4 million in support of Amalgamated Dairies Limited (ADL).

This funding will help the dairy cooperative install new automation and robotics equipment for their existing Feta packaging line at the Summerside facility. The upgrades are expected to double packaging speed and capacity, and will help bring new products to the market.

  • The funding announced today includes $1.4 million from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s (AAFC) AgriInnovate Program, $200,000 from the PEI Department of Agriculture under the Canadian Agriculture Partnership, and $810,000 through the Innovation Prince Edward Island Enriched Investment Tax Credit.

  • The AAFC's AgriInnovate program is part of the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a five-year (2018-2023), $3-billion investment by federal, provincial and territorial governments to strengthen the agriculture and agri-food sector.

  • Amalgamated Dairies Limited, a dairy farmer owned cooperative, has been providing the domestic, international and local community in Prince Edward Island with a wide range of high-quality products for close to 70 years.

  • Prince Edward Island's dairy industry is a significant contributor to the provincial economy. In 2020, it generated $604 million, contributing approximately 15% to the province’s farm cash receipts. That same year, Prince Edward Island's 157 dairy farms produced over 117 million litres of raw milk, accounting for approximately 1.3% of Canada’s milk production. 

  • Prince Edward Island’s dairy manufacturing sector employs about 12% of workers in the province’s food manufacturing sector, representing an estimated value in salary of $13 million. 

  • The Prince Edward Island Enriched Investment Tax Credit complements the existing Prince Edward Island Corporate Investment Tax Credit of 10%. The tax credit is applied to certain capital investments made by manufacturing and processing businesses.
